Are You In or Out?
The temperatures are about to drop. The holidays are around the corner. Summer situationships are starting to lose their shine, and suddenly everybody remembers how nice it is to have somebody to cuddle with on a cold Saturday night.
Yep. Cuffing season is coming.
For anyone unfamiliar with the term, cuffing season is that unofficial time of year—usually beginning in the fall—when people who were perfectly happy being single during the warmer months suddenly become a little more interested in settling down, dating consistently, or finding someone to spend the colder months with.
But before you start accepting applications for your fall boo, there’s one question worth asking:
Are you actually ready for cuffing season—or should you sit this one out?
Being Ready Means More Than Wanting Somebody to Cuddle With
Cold weather can make companionship sound especially good.
Movie nights. Dinner dates. Holiday parties. Matching pajamas. Weekend getaways. Someone to text when you’re bored. Someone to curl up next to when it’s 30 degrees outside and you have absolutely no intention of leaving the house.
All of that sounds great.
But wanting companionship and being ready for a relationship aren’t necessarily the same thing.
Maybe you spent the summer healing from a breakup. Maybe you’ve been intentionally single. Maybe you’ve finally gotten comfortable with your own company. Or maybe you’ve been dating, but nobody has made you want to give up your peace just yet.
Don’t let the season convince you that you need a relationship simply because everyone else seems to be looking for one.
If You’re Getting in the Game, Know What You’re Looking For
If you’re ready to date, this can actually be a great time to meet someone.
People tend to spend more time indoors. The holidays create opportunities for dates and social events. And for some singles, the shift into fall brings a stronger desire for consistency and connection.
But intentions matter.
Are you looking for someone to casually date?
Do you want a committed relationship?
Are you open to meeting people without putting a label on anything immediately?
Or do you simply want somebody to keep you company until spring?
There’s nothing wrong with knowing what you want. The problem starts when two people want completely different things but nobody says it out loud.
Watch Out for the Seasonal Relationship
Here’s where cuffing season gets tricky.
Someone can behave very much like a boyfriend or girlfriend without actually wanting to build anything permanent.
They text every morning.
They want to see you every weekend.
You’re watching movies together, ordering food, exchanging holiday gifts, and spending enough time together that your friends are asking:
“So…are y’all together?”
Then spring arrives and suddenly they’re “not ready for anything serious.”
Excuse me?
Before getting too comfortable, pay attention to whether the relationship is actually progressing.
Someone who’s genuinely interested in building something with you should be interested in your life, not just your availability.
Do they make plans in advance? Are they consistent? Have you talked about what you’re both looking for? Do their actions match what they’re telling you?
Most importantly:
Would this relationship still make sense if it were 85 degrees outside?
Because that’s the real test.
And Maybe You’re Sitting This One Out
You are also completely allowed to look at cuffing season and say:
Nah. I’m good.
Sitting this one out doesn’t mean you’re bitter, lonely, unavailable, or anti-love.
Maybe you’re protecting your peace.
Maybe you’re concentrating on your children, career, business, friendships, or yourself.
Maybe dating sounds exhausting right now.
Or maybe you’ve reached the point where you’d rather be single than entertain another half-interested person who doesn’t know what they want.
That’s a valid choice too.
Being single during cuffing season doesn’t mean sitting home staring out the window while everybody else falls in love.
Go to brunch. Take the trip. Have girls’ or guys’ nights. Go on dates if you feel like it. Meet new people. Flirt. Have fun.
Single doesn’t mean unavailable for life.
So…Are You Ready?
Cuffing season doesn’t have to mean desperately searching for somebody before the first cold night.
Maybe this is your season to meet someone.
Maybe it’s your season to date differently.
Maybe it’s your season to finally stop entertaining situationships.
And maybe it’s your season to sit comfortably on the sidelines, wrapped in your own blanket, watching everybody else figure it out.
Either way, make the decision because it’s what you want—not because colder weather convinced you that being single is suddenly an emergency.
